Tips for traveling with little ones ✈️ 🧳 🌴
Deep dive with Little News
Hello everyone! With summer having started, we thought it’d be useful to give you some tips for traveling with little ones ✈️ 🧳 🌴. If you have more tips to share, please let us know in the comments section below.
General tips when flying with a baby or a toddler ✈️ 🧳:
For babies under 6 months old, call the airline to book a bassinet. Baby can sleep in it while you can enjoy your flight! 😴
While babies under 2 years old can fly on your lap (i.e. you don’t need to purchase a seat for them and can just hold them the whole flight), book their own seat if financially feasible. This way you can bring the baby’s car seat into the plane, and secure the baby in a seat with car seat on it 🛫.
If you didn’t book a seat for your little one, but need to bring a car seat with you to your destination, put the car seat into a case and gate check the car seat 💺.
Same as above with the stroller. Some smaller strollers (i.e. Babyzen Yoyo) fit the overhead bin and can be brought with you on the flight. Otherwise, you will need to gate check your stroller 👶.
For kids under 1 year old, it may be useful to bring a baby carrier to the airport and carry them after you gate check the stroller - you will have two spare hands this way! 🛃
Pack a diaper bag and bring it with you on the flight. Make sure to have the following items packed: food and drink (formula, milk, etc.) for the kiddo, diapers (rule of thumb: 1 diaper per 1 hour of flight - you most likely won’t use all of them but it’s nice not to have to worry about them), lots of wipes, diaper cream, changing pad, extra clothes for baby and you (in case baby spills something on you), a muslin / blanket in case it’s cold on the plane, toys for the kiddo 🎒.
For breastfed / formula-fed babies, try to feed them when taking off and landing (helps with ear popping). For kids who eat solids, you can give them water / milk to drink 🍼.
Most young babies sleep throughout the flight (airplane’s sound works as white noise for them!). It’s a bit tougher with toddlers but try to keep them on their normal nap schedule 💤.
Make sure you and the baby are hydrated during the flight and try to enjoy the flight!
Kids equipment we found useful when traveling with kids 🍼 👶:
Pack n play to use as the kiddo’s crib at your destination. Keep in mind that hotels generally provide cribs, but most Airbnbs don’t. Guava Lotus https://www.guavafamily.com/products/lotus-everywhere-travel-crib and Graco https://www.gracobaby.com/home-and-gear/pack-n-play-playards/ are great. Don’t forget bed sheets and sleepsack!
Slumberpod that goes on top on the travel crib is a great portable blackout solution https://www.slumberpod.com/
Inglesina travel chair for kids who eat solids if you are staying with family or in an airbnb with no kids’ equipment https://inglesina.us/products/fast-table-chair
Some parents prefer to bring their kids’ plates, cups, utensils with them 🙋♀️
Portable white noise like this one https://www.amazon.com/
Lightweight travel car seat like Cosco Scenera
Travel stroller like Babyzen Yoyo or Uppababy Minu
Buy some cheap toys on amazon or in dollar store and give them to your kiddo on the airplane - it’ll keep them entertained for a few minutes (we found that play dough, little lego, painting sets, busy boards work well).
We hope it was helpful. Have a great weekend ❤️
