AAP experts answer pediatricians’ questions on monkeypox
AAP experts are answering pediatricians’ most frequently asked questions about how to prevent, recognize, test for and treat monkeypox. Children have not played a significant role in the current outbreak with only two cases reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but some may be at risk for severe disease if they are infected.
AAP releases updated guidance for managing neonatal hyperbilirubinemia
Updated AAP guidance emphasizes the need for early identification of newborns of 35 or more weeks’ gestation at risk for hyperbilirubinemia who might require treatment to prevent kernicterus. This includes identification of newborns with maternal anti-erythrocyte antibodies and other risk factors such as lower gestational age, jaundice in the first 24 hours after birth and poor feeding.

Study finds increase in gun-related deaths among children, adolescents during pandemic
Researchers analyzed gun-related deaths in children under 18 years from 2014-’21 using data from the Gun Violence Archive. During that time 8,477 children and adolescents were killed, 78% of whom were ages 12-17 and 79% of whom were boys, according to the study.
Study finds no evidence of social contagion among transgender youths
Adolescents assigned female at birth are no more likely than those assigned male to identify as transgender, which researchers say helps debunk a theory of social contagion. This theory, sometimes known as rapid-onset gender dysphoria, stigmatizes youths and “should not be used to argue against the provision of gender-affirming medical care,” authors wrote in “Sex Assigned at Birth Ratio among Transgender and Gender Diverse Adolescents in the United States”.
Study results prompt call for guidelines on antibiotic prescribing via telehealth
The proportion of antibiotic prescriptions written during pediatric telehealth visits increased rapidly in the early months of the pandemic but decreased as in-office visits resumed, a new study showed. More than half of antibiotics were prescribed via telehealth in the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that figure dropped to just 2% in the spring and summer of 2021, according to an analysis of telehealth and in-person visits from March 2020 to July 2021 at a pediatric primary care network.
Air pollution, including during wildfires, shows ill effects in children
New research linking air pollution data from federal monitors in the Sacramento area of California, including during significant fires, is showing ill effects of pollution exposure among children, a new University of California, Davis, study suggests.
Blood samples show that children have elevated markers of inflammation, such as interleukin 6, if they were exposed to higher air pollution. Further, higher air pollution was linked to lower cardiac autonomic regulation in children, which impacts how fast the heart beats and how hard it pumps, according to the study.
