CDC issues advisory on parechovirus infections in infants
Health officials are asking clinicians to be on the lookout for infants with parechovirus (PeV) infection following reports of infections in multiple states. Common symptoms of PeV infections in children ages 6 months to 5 years include upper respiratory tract infection, fever and rash.
CDC releases pediatric monkeypox guidance
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released new guidance on recognizing and caring for children and adolescents with monkeypox. “Pediatricians should know about monkeypox, be prepared to answer parents’ questions but recognize that it’s incredibly rare,” said Kristina Bryant, M.D., FAAP, a member of the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases.
There have been two pediatric cases among more than 3,500 cases in the U.S., according to the CDC.

UW study strengthens evidence of link between air pollution and child brain development
Air pollution is not just a problem for lungs. Increasingly, research suggests air pollution can influence childhood behavioral problems and even IQ. A new study led by the University of Washington has added evidence showing that both prenatal and postnatal exposure to air pollution can harm kids.
Higher rates of preterm birth in women infected with COVID-19 in late pregnancy (study also finds no difference in pregnancy loss between infected and non-infected women)
SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, but only for women infected in their final trimester, according to research published in the open access journal PLOS ONE. The study of over 5,000 pregnant women is one of the first to look at pregnancy outcomes for COVID-19 patients by trimester.
COVID-19 vaccine does not negatively affect placental health, study finds
Vaccination against COVID-19 had no impact on the health of placentas in pregnant women, according to new research. The findings further emphasize the safety of vaccination during pregnancy for babies and pregnant women, the investigators note.

A diet high in sugar and fat such as burgers, fries and fizzy drinks can negatively affect a new mother's breast milk and baby's health even before the child is conceived, a new study has found.
